From Farmyards to Towpaths

Posted By Louisa Allen Tuesday, 31st August 2010 8:09am

I recently visited Umberslade Farm Park in Tanworth-in-Arden. Children of all ages love all the activities on offer and I too became a big kid for the afternoon as I rode mini tractors and cheered on the farmyard ferret racing!
I also had the opportunity to get up close and personal with the gorgeous baby piglets, lambs and kid goats. I fell in love with the newborn bunnies and guinea pigs but didn't have the knack when it came to milking a goat! I also had great fun shooting sponge balls from large cannons in the Play Barn and finished it all off with delicious tea and cake in the sunshine.

From farms to water -  as on Saturday I boarded 'Jim' , the narrowboat. Departing Kate Boats in Warwick, we set sail and after getting through 23 locks in torrential rain we moored up near Hatton.
Sunday saw me and the crew head through Lapworth and then on Monday we arrived in Bancroft Basin, right in the heart of Stratford. On Tuesday we left Stratford and headed for Wooten Wawen and Preston Baggot. Wednesday saw us travel along the stretch of the Grand Union through Shrewley, before returning to our final destination of Hatton Locks. The journey had it's highs and lows,  but one thing is certain, canal folk are some of the friendliest you will ever meet.
